This dated 1980s kitchen received a complete makeover, transforming the room into a modern marvel.
When homeowners Helen and Frank decided it was time to upgrade their kitchen, they turned to Renovation Specialist Lia Boersma for help.
The kitchen in their two-storey townhouse hadn’t had an update since the home was built in the 1980s. A makeover was much-needed to modernise the space and improve the storage.
Lia introduced Helen and Frank to her Project Manager, Danielle Paul, who worked with the couple to understand what they were looking for in their new kitchen design. Together, they discussed the renovation budget and looked at feasible solutions that would bring their vision to life.
With a budget of $70,000 to work with, Danielle and her renovation team put together a modern yet unique kitchen design that Helen and Frank absolutely adore. Danielle then outlined the project, including any risks or constraints, so Helen and Frank knew exactly what would happen at each stage of their renovation. With the schedule prepared, the transformation was ready to begin.
When creating the final design for this project, the team ran into a few hurdles with the unique u-shape of the existing kitchen. Danielle needed to devise a solution that would keep to Helen and Frank’s goals and their budget.
Overcoming the challenge, the design team worked closely with the builders and established a plan to deliver the desired, modern kitchen while working with the space’s distinctive U-shape.
The kitchen renovation was due to commence in March of 2019. However, COVID-19 hit around the same time, sending New Zealand into lockdown and subsequently pushing back construction.
Despite this delay, Danielle assured Helen and Frank that they would have their dream kitchen completed as soon as it was possible and safe to do so.
The original kitchen had red vinyl flooring and exposed timber cabinets synonymous with their 1980s era. While it had a certain charm, it was dated and in need of a refresh; and ‘fresh’ is exactly what you’ll find in the transformed space.
The upgraded kitchen features wood-look vinyl flooring and new cabinetry sporting white paint and sleek black handles. The kitchen bench has also been redesigned, providing greater storage and the perfect spot for a breakfast bar.
Making a statement, a beautiful black oven/stovetop and rangehood create an air of elegance. This style is fantastically amplified by the mauve glass splashback that joins the appliances to establish a one-of-a-kind kitchen. Modern lighting fixtures make significant final improvements to the room and have certainly changed its atmosphere to feel more expansive.
Despite the delay in construction due to COVID-19 lockdowns, Danielle managed to have the kitchen renovated as soon as possible, bringing Helen and Frank’s dream kitchen to life.
Danielle took care of everything, from establishing the bespoke design through to ensuring the build was completed to the highest standard. And the results are beautiful. The once dated and dark kitchen has transformed into a brighter, sleeker space with a modern design.
