Renovation with a Family Focus

Nobody likes working in a dark and dated kitchen – especially one that feels isolated from other areas of the home. This was the problem Katharine faced at her Tamberry Hall property; instead of a warm and welcoming family hub, her kitchen lacked style, flow, and functionality, and the dining room with beautiful garden views had slowly turned into nothing more than a storage room! She wanted help to transform her home and create spaces that worked for her busy family.

Seeking advice, Katharine contacted her local Refresh Renovation team, Tracy and Roger Kinsman, who were only too happy to arrange a free consultation. Katharine was full of ideas to improve her living space, but wanted to find someone she could trust to manage the project from the design and planning phase through to completion.

Concept and Design

Katherine initially considered a full home renovation including bathrooms, but after discussing budgets and options with Tracy and Roger, she decided to focus solely on a new kitchen and dining space that would achieve a transformation with wow factor. 

Katherine’s top priority was to create an open plan kitchen, dining, and entertaining area. To achieve this Tracy and Roger’s design team created a concept that would demolish the original kitchen, knock out walls, and create the space needed for a large family hub that would be light and bright. The design would be contemporary but pay homage to the traditional features of the property by highlighting wooden beams and posts throughout the space, and by installing a shaker style kitchen. With a busy family, the space needed to look good while being low maintenance!

Scheduling a Renovation around Family

Once Katharine was happy with the detailed plans and budget, the next step in the renovation journey could begin. At Refresh, the homeowner is always our number one priority. That’s why Tracy and Roger worked hard to tailor the renovation around Katharine’s family who would be staying on site during the project. With young children (and 3 dogs!) in the home, the Refresh team were vigilant in ensuring site safety, and adhered to scheduled working hours and agreed timelines to ensure the impact on the family was minimised and the renovation experience was a positive one.

Tracy and Roger used their existing network of trusted professionals - from plasters, tilers, and carpenters to interior designers, electricians, plumbers and more - to coordinate a dream team of contractors to transform Katharine’s kitchen. Tracy and Roger managed every detail, making the renovation straightforward and stress-free for Katharine and her family.

A Brand New Look

Katharine wanted ‘wow factor’ for her new kitchen, and Tracy and Roger delivered in spades. The space is warm, welcoming, and open – it’s almost hard to believe it is the same dark house that once used the dining room for storage! 

With the walls gone, there is now an open plan kitchen, dining, and entertaining space that is a fabulous family hub. Large format tile throughout connects the spaces, while white paint and new glazed French doors flood the room with natural light.

In the kitchen, shaker style cabinets in muted navy add personality and colour, while the large farm-house style sink adds to the character. The original oak beams and posts look stunning, and by highlighting them in the design, Tracy and Roger could pay homage to the home’s heritage while still delivering a contemporary space.

There was plenty of thought put into the practical details too; scratch proof kitchen flooring and easy clean low-profile skirting make this space low maintenance with the four-legged family members!

Final Thoughts

Tracy and Roger delivered a transformative renovation that not only looks amazing but has enhanced the family’s enjoyment of their home. Disjointed rooms are now a contemporary and cohesive space that allows for cooking, dining, and relaxing together. Tracy is thrilled with the result.
